CANINE SAFETY FOR PERSONNEL



1. Do not run in front of any K-9 when responding to an assignment.

2. Do not run into any area when a K-9 is running loose, without handlers the permission.

3. Do not make any aggressive movement toward any handler, or any K-9.

4. Don't give any commands to the K-9 inside or outside the vehicle.

5. For your safety ask permission to come in reaching distance or petting of the K-9.

6. Don't attempt to feed any K-9.

7. Do not enter the K-9 vehicle with out permission, while the vehicle is attend or not.

8. If a K-9 comes up to you, Don't run! Stay motionless until the Handler calls him.

9. If the Handler is down or injured the necessary steps to follow are:

A. Call to the injured Handler, If the Officer can, he will have control over the K-9.

B. Call for assistance from another K-9 Unit, from the department or from a different Department. The other K-9 Units have been trained to handle these situations.

C. Each K-9 Vehicle has a sleeve in the truck, it can be used to gain control of the K-9.

D. If all above fails, contact a member of the Officer's family the K-9 knows.
